Raising questions over placing actress Pori Moni on remand for the third time, the High Court has said the police department should try to understand that every human life is very precious.

“Police cannot plea to place an accused on remand without any legal ground though they took Pori Moni on remand thrice which questioned the criminal justice system,” said the High Court bench of Justice Mostofa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol in their five-page order published on Wednesday (Sept 8).

The High Court said the investigation officer (IO) of the case took Pori Moni on remand thrice violating the directives of the upper court though he got enough time to question Pori Moni on the first remand.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Pori Moni and her associate Dipu from her flat at Banani in the capital on August 4 last. RAB claimed that they had seized different types of drugs from Pori Moni’s flat.

Then Pori Moni was placed on remand thrice. On August 22, her bail petition was submitted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Court. However, the court fixed September 13 for hearing the bail plea.

In such a situation, the High Court issued a rule on August 26 asking why directive would not be given for quick hearing on bail petition in Pori Moni’s case. At the same time, the High Court asked to reply to the rule by September 1. Later, hearing on Pori Moni’s bail petition was set for August 31.

Actress Pori Moni granted bail in a drug case against her on August 31. She was freed from Kashimpur Jail on the following day.
