The Japanese representative attending the 36th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (APRC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Dhaka on Friday strongly condemned Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine in a virtual speech at the concluding session.
On the other hand, the Russian representative expressed strong resentment and protested against Japanese representative’s condemnation of the war.
The Russian representative said the theme of the FAO Conference is “Agriculture and Food Security”. It is not fair to discuss this issue here. The issue is out of the agenda of the conference. The war could be discussed at the UN Security Council or discussed in the General Assembly.
This was stated by Abdur Razzak, the Minister of Agriculture at a press conference after the concluding session of the 36th Asia and Pacific Regional Conference of FAO at Hotel Intercontinental in Dhaka on Friday.
“Japan is a member country of the APRC; it is also one of the 46 countries. The APRC conference was also held in Japan. After speaking at various points, the Japanese envoy protested the attack on Ukraine. We should condemn it,” he said.
Japan said the matter very seriously. Suddenly Russia wanted to speak. Russia was given a chance. Russia said it is a food and agriculture program, they (Japan) cannot discuss it here. It is not fair to discuss outside the agenda. It will be discussed in the UN Security Council. This is not a topic for the FAO. After that, China also agreed with Russia’s statement, said the Agriculture Minister.
The 37th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference will be held in Sri Lanka. All the FAO countries in this region have agreed to hold the event in Sri Lanka. The conference is scheduled to be held in the Asia-Pacific region in 2024. Bangladesh has been elected President of the Conference for the next two years.
