A special session of the parliament begins today marking the 50th anniversary of the legislature.

This will also be the 22nd session of 11th Jatiya Sangsad.

The special session is likely to continue for four working days, said sources at the parliament secretariat.

President Abdul Hamid will deliver a memorial speech in the house highlighting the country’s achievement and the role of the parliament on April 7.

A resolution on the president’s speech will be adopted in JS following discussion of lawmakers, added the source. While talking to reporters on Monday, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury recalled the day when the Jatiya Sangsad sat for the first time on April 7 in 1973. “In continuation of this, we are going to celebrate the golden jubilee of parliament in 2023. That is why April 7 is an important day for parliament,” she said.

In addition to the special session, year-long  events are planned throughout the year to commemorate the golden jubilee of Jatiya Sangsad.

“We are thinking of a mutual exchange of views between the senior parliamentarians and the young generation,” the speaker said.

“We also want to hold an international conference. That may be after the budget session… It may be held in September or October,” she added.

Earlier in November 2020, a special session was held for the first time in the history of the Bangladesh parliament, on the occasion of Bangabandhu’s birth centenary.
