Mahiya Mahi interrogated at Dhaka airport amid heightened security
In the wake of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation following mass student and public protests, security has been intensified at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Passengers now face multiple layers of scrutiny before being allowed to travel abroad.
Actress Mahiya Mahi was one such individual caught in this rigorous security net, where she was detained and questioned for nearly an hour and a half. Mahi herself shared this experience in a video message on Facebook.
Mahi explained, “A couple of days ago, I had to leave the country for personal reasons. An incident occurred there. I was made to wait for about an hour and a half, just sitting there, as the authorities wanted to ensure there were no charges against me. Only after thorough checks of reports from agencies like DGFI and NSI was I allowed to fly.”
The actress however expressed a positive outlook on the entire situation. She believes that, given the current state of the country, strict security measures are not a bad thing. “I think it would be beneficial if such measures are always in place at the airport,” Mahi stated.
Beyond her acting career, Mahiya Mahi was actively engaged in Awami League politics. After not receiving the party’s nomination, she ran as an independent candidate during the last parliamentary election but did not succeed.
In the aftermath of the Awami League government’s fall, many celebrities associated with the party are now living in fear, with several going into hiding. Legal cases have also been filed against a few, including actors Ferdous and Zayed Khan.
