A man yesterday appeared in court accused of attempting to murder a woman because he believed she worked at Britain’s signals intelligence agency GCHQ.

Joshua Bowles, 29, allegedly stabbed the victim, who was referred to in court by a code number rather than by name.

The attack took place outside a leisure centre around five kilometres (three miles) from the intelligence agency’s base in the western English town of Cheltenham.

Bowles, a Cheltenham resident, appeared at Westminster magistrates’ court in central London. The court handles all terror-related cases in England.

Bowles was charged with attempted murder after an investigation by counter-terrorism detectives following the alleged attack on March 9.
