Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 dethrones Kamal Haasan’s Vikram as highest grosser in Tamil Nadu

Mani Ratnam’s labour of love Ponniyin Selvan 1 has been making waves globally since the day of its release. The historical epic, which is the first of two cinematic parts based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan, arrived in theatres on September 30 and took the worldwide box office by storm.
Ponniyin Selvan 1, also known as PS1, has grossed over Rs 400 crore globally in the first two weeks, thus becoming the highest-grossing Tamil film overseas. The Chiyaan Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been on a rampage back home as well, particularly in Tamil Nadu, as it has dethroned Kamal Haasan’s Vikram as the top-earning film in the state.

Vikram, which released in June this year, grossed Rs 183 crore approx in Tamil Nadu, as per trade sources. PS1, currently in its third week, has raced past the lifetime TN biz of Vikram and now looks set to breach the Rs 200 crore mark.
Talking about the Hindi version of PS1, it has remained steady thus far and has grossed Rs 25 crore. Trade expert Girish Johar took to Twitter to share an updated list of the box office achievements of PS1.
“#PonniyinSelvan will be breaching ₹200crs in TN & is now No.1 grosser in TN, No.1 Tamil overseas grosser, Global gross ₹433crs in 2wks, Hindi gross ₹25crs,” read Johar’s tweet.
