Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna has demanded release of the arrested leaders of Hefazat-e Islam Bangladesh.

He made the demand in a statement sent to the mass media on Tuesday.

The DUCSU’s former VP claimed that the workers of different affiliated organisations of the ruling Awami League made the situation heated by attacking the Hefazat workers and ordinary devotees at the peaceful protest programme at Baitul Mukarram on March 26 last which were exposed in different video footage. Centering the incident, an anarchic situation was created in the country and people were shot dead. The government will have to take the responsibilities of the killings.

Manna said that the government has resorted to wholesale arrest of Hefazat-e Islam leaders or alems and place them on remand in the cases filed after the incidents and even in the cases filed in 2013. It was clear from the criticism by the highest level of the state in parliament that being failed to face the Hefazat-e Islam politically, the the the ruling party has resorted to vegeanceful politics against the Hefazat-e Islam leaders and indulged in destroing them using the state machinery. ” I demand the release of arrested alems and ulemas immediately,” he said.

The Nagorik Oikya convener said it is the main responsibility of the government to contain the coronavirus infection, arrange the treatment of coronavirus infected patients, ensure the adequate supply of oxygen to hospitals and beds at ICUs, and provide food to the marginalised people. Instead of paying any heed toward that direction, the government is trying to cling to power illegally resorting to filing false cases, placing people on remand, inflicting torture on them. Country’s common people and Muslims would not accept the atrocities in any way. People have started raising protest at diferent parts of the country. A mass upsurge would start in the country soon and the illegal power grabbers would be washed away by that mass upsurge, he said.
