A young man was hacked to death, and at least five others were injured during a clash between two groups over New Year’s celebrations in Narayanganj’s Fatullah area early today.

The deceased, identified as Md Hridoy (20), was the son of Habibur Rahman Hawlader of Pagla Boubazar in Fatullah, police said.

Among the injured, Sunny, 20, Apon, 21, and Rabbi, 25, received treatment at separate hospitals.

Sunny, in critical condition, is being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Fatullah Model Police Station.

Witnesses said a group of young men organised a concert in the Pagla Boubazar area to celebrate the New Year. Around 12:30am, a clash broke out between two groups of organisers over a minor dispute. Hridoy was attacked with sharp weapons in the clash.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital afterwards, where doctors declared him dead.

Md Sabbir, a friend of the deceased, said the attackers were locals from the same area.

A murder case has been filed with Fatullah Police Station, accusing six individuals. However, no arrests have been made yet, the OC added.
