New York State Senate Passes Resolution Declaring April 14 as ‘Bangla New Year Day’

The New York State Senate has unanimously passed a resolution declaring April 14 as “Bangla New Year Day.” On January 22, Senate Resolution 234, introduced by Senator Luis Sepulveda, was approved. The resolution, titled “Memorializing Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim April 14, 2025, as Bangla New Year Day in the State of New York,” paves the way for state-wide celebrations of Bangla New Year at various levels in New York.

The resolution was initiated and facilitated by Bishwajit Saha, the founder and CEO of Muktdhara Foundation, who worked closely with Senator Luis Sepulveda. Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to issue an official proclamation soon.

 

Celebration of Bangla New Year in New York

Bangladeshis in New York celebrate Pohela Boishakh (Bangla New Year) with great enthusiasm in iconic locations like Times Square and other venues. Hundreds of organizations and individuals have been organizing cultural events to honor and showcase Bangladeshi heritage.

In 2024, the celebration reached new heights as the first-ever “Shoto Kontho Boishakh” event was held in Times Square, featuring renowned artists from Kolkata, Dhaka, the United States, and Canada. Additionally, a colorful Mongol Shobhajatra (peace parade) and Boishakhi Mela were inaugurated at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

 

Pride and Contribution of Bengali Talent

Prominent individuals of Bangladeshi origin, such as renowned architect F.R. Khan, sitar virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan, author Jhumpa Lahiri, YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, and Salman Khan, founder of Khan Academy, have played a significant role in showcasing Bangladeshi heritage globally.

The passing of this resolution further highlights the rich cultural contributions of Bangladeshis in New York. Bengali community leaders, activists, and artists have expressed their excitement and pride over this milestone.

This resolution ensures that April 14, 2025, and beyond, will witness grand celebrations of Bangla New Year across New York State, cementing its significance in the multicultural fabric of the region
