The crisis now going on in Bangladesh is not about the formation of an Election Commission (EC), rather the crisis is about determining what will be the election-time government, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.

“Not the EC, but the election-time govt is essential to resolve crisis,” he said while talking to journalists after placing wreaths on BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman’s mausoleum at Chandrima Udyan in the capital on Saturday on the occasion of the 43rd founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).

Some 60 leaders and workers led by JCD president Fazlur Rahman Khokon and general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shyamol went Zia’s mausoleum at about 10:15am to pay respect.

At that time, they chanted various slogans including one demanding BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s release. After some time, the party’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam appeared there. He, accompanied by the JCD leaders and activists, placed wreath on the mausoleum and offered fateha there.

When Fakhrul was asked about the issue of dialogue with president, he said, “We consider this dialogue meaningless. The present political crisis is neither related to the formation of the Election Commission, nor framing any law. They major crisis is what type of government will remain in power during the general election.”

“The general elections will become insignificant and unacceptable if the Awami League government remains in power. It will be meaningless. There must be an impartial and non-party election-time government to conduct the next general election. That government will form a neutral Election Commission and it conduct an impartial election.”

Conveying the New Year’s greetings to the countrymen, the BNP Secretary General said, “I convey the New Year’s greetings to the countrymen on behalf of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tareque Rahman.”

“We expect that people will get free, democracy will get free, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia will get free, and we will be able to establish a people’s government in the country,” he said.
