BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that whether the Oikyafront will remain in the election depends on the attitude of the Election Commission and the election-time government.

“The authorities of Election Commission and the government will determine whether we will be in the election race or not,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the comments while responding to reporters after a meeting between Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikyafront delegation and the Election Commission at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital this afternoon.

Leaders of Jatiya Oikyafront led by Dr Kamal Hossain, sat with the authorities of the Election Commission, seeking deferment of the national election by a month.

The meeting began at 3:30 pm and ended around 5:30pm while Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda and other Commissioners were present at the meeting.

While responding to journalists after the meeting, Dr Kamal Hossain said: “The Commission assured us of ensuring a free, fair and credible election.”

“I hope they will keep up their commitment given to the Oikyafront leaders,” he added.

Earlier yesterday, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said that there was no scope of delaying the election schedule further for the 11th parliamentary polls.
