More than 50 shops and houses have been gutted in a fire in Jurachhari Bazar in Rangamati.

The incident took place around 3pm today (October 9, 2022), reports our Rangamati correspondent quoting Jurachhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jitendra Nath Kumar.

However, the reason behind the fire could not be ascertained.

Eyewithness said, at least 48 shops and eight houses were gutted in the incident. The amount of loss is estimated to be approximately Tk 3 crore.

There would not be such a loss had there been a fire station in the upazila, locals said.

Locals and security forces tried to bring the fire under control by throwing buckets of water but failed as it rampaged through the entire market, said the UNO.

Jitendra Nath said, the fire being huge could not be brought under control just by using buckets.

The fire service team was on its way from Rangamati Sadar, he added.
