President, PM urge DU teachers, students to work for Sonar Bangla

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged the Dhaka University (DU) teachers, students and researchers to devote themselves to the welfare of people to build Sonar Bangla utilizing their merits, wisdom and values.

They made the call in separate messages on the eve of the 97th founding anniversary of Dhaka University and wished successes of all the programmes of the day, reports BSS.

In his message, President Abdul Hamid greeted all former and current students, guardians, teachers and all others of the university on the occasion of Dhaka University Day.

He said July 1 is a memorable day in the history of Dhaka University as it started its journey on the day in 1921.

The President said since its inception, the DU has been playing an outstanding role in expansion of education in the region and building a meritorious nation.

The university had historic contributions to every democratic movements of Bangalee nation including 1952 Language Movement, 1969 Mass Upsurge and 1971 Liberation War, he said.

President Abdul Hamid said the DU is not only an instruction of higher education but also a source of the country’s hopes and aspirations.

He expressed his optimism that the university teachers, students and researchers would continue contributing to the welfare of the nation through their merits, skills and innovations.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this year’s theme of the day “Higher Education for Inclusive Development” is very much time-befitting.

She said the Dhaka University historic and glorious contributions to nurture spirit of Liberation War, expansion of knowledge and socioeconomic development of the country.

The university is one of the key associates of Bangladesh to flourish the culture, strengthen democracy and fulfill the hopes and aspirations of masses.

She said the university has played a pioneering role in every democratic movement. Many teachers, students, officers and employees participated in the War of Liberation and embraced martyrdom, she added.

She expressed her optimism that the university teachers and students will play an important role in creating public awareness against terrorism, militancy and abuse of drugs and thus contribute to build a Sonar Bangla through their merits and wisdom.
