Samrat denied bail in graft case again

A court in Dhaka on Thursday rejected the bail petition of expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman, Judge of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-6, rejected the bail petition after hearing the plea of Samrat, mastermind of casino based gambling.

On November 12, 2019, ACC’s deputy director Md Jahangir Alam filed the case against Samrat for accumulating illegal wealth worth Tk 2,94,80,087.

After investigation, the investigation officer of the case submitted a charge sheet before the court on November 26 last year.

The case statement says that Samrat acquired wealth worth  Tk 2,94,80,087 through illegal means. He used to control 17 clubs at Motijheel and Fakirapool areas, and took large amounts as commission employing his own people there. He also used to conduct casino business in the clubs. With the illegally earned wealth, Samrat bought dozens of plots and flats at Gulshan, Dhanmondi, and Uttara. He also built houses there.

Besides, he laundered foreign currency worth Tk 1,000 crore to Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai and United States.

Had Samrat been received bail in the ACC’s case on Thursday, he would have no more obstacle to come out of jail.

Earlier, the court granted bail in three, out of four cases against him.

On April 13, the court denied bail to Samrat in the case.

Samrat secured bail in drugs case on April 11, in an arms case and a money laundering case on April 10.

Samrat has been undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital since November 24 last year.
