Some 2.45 lakh AstraZeneca vaccine doses to arrive on Saturday

As many as 2.45 lakh doses of AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive in Bangladesh on Saturday (July 24) afternoon. The vaccine will arrive under the COIVAX.

COVAX is a worldwide initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines directed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, and the World Health Organization.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has planned to provide AstraZeneca vaccine doses to those who have not yet received the second dose.

Earlier on Monday (July 19), Health Minister Zahid Maleque told journalists that more 1.29 crore vaccine doses would arrive in the country by August.

The Health Minister said 1.29 crore vaccines include AstraZeneca’s 29 lakh, Sinopharm’s 40 lakh and Johnson and Johnson’s 60 lakh. Bangladesh would receive Sinopharm’s 10 lakh, out of 40 lakh, vaccine doses as gift. The rest 30 lakhs were bought.

Zahid Maleque also said the age-limit for receiving vaccine would be brought down at 18 years.

He said receiving Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Sinopharm vaccines has been confirmed owing to the constant efforts of the Bangladesh government. Now, the government has planned to reduce the age-limit to bring maximum number of people under vaccination programme.

Meanwhile, 30 lakh more Coronavirus vaccine doses from the United States arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by a special flight of Qatar Airways on Thursday evening. With those, the United States have provided 50 lakh Moderna vaccine doses to Bangladesh under COVAX,
