Concerned authorities haven’t yet started salvaging the oil tanker, Sagar Nandini-2, from Meghna river, nearly 60 hours after it was hit by an unidentified vessel leading to the disaster in Bhola Sadar’s Tultoli area.

Abdus Salam, joint director (maritime security and traffic department) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), said “It is impossible to carry out rescue operations without unloading the fuel oil from the tanker. After the necessary equipment, including two divers, arrive this afternoon, the oil will be unloaded first from the tanker.”

He said the BIWTA Director Abdur Rahim has already visited the spot.

Besides, a three-member probe committee, headed by the BIWTA director, has been formed to investigate the incident.

Abdus Salam said BIWTA does not have the necessary vessels to rescue the oil tanker.
