Tidal surge causes erosion in St. Martin’s Island

Massive erosion has taken place in St Martin’s island of Cox’s Bazar due to cyclone Yaas induced sea surge.
The islanders said strong wind started sweeping from Wednesday early morning with moderate to heavy rain.
The combined effects of the super cyclone and increasing water levels of the sea due to full moon tide caused massive erosion in Majhar para, Uttar para, Paschim para, Purba para and Jetty ghat area.
The lone tourist jetty and several trawlers have been damaged severely, said St. Martin’s island UP chairman Noor Ahmed.
Teknaf UNO Parvez Chowdhury said he has heard about the information of erosion.
Initiative to provide relief materials among the affected people has been taken.
