Tipu-Preeti murder: Masum gives confessional statement at court

Arrested Masum Mohammad alias Akash has given statement to a court in Dhaka under Section 164 confessing his involvement in murder of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu and college student Samia Afnan Zaman Pritee in firing.

He gave confessional statement to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court on Tuesday (April 5). Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain recorded his confession. After recording the confessional statement, the accused was sent to jail.

Court sources said Masum confessed killing Jahidul Islam Tipu in firing. He went to the spot riding on friend Mollah Shamim’s motorcycle. After firing at Jahidul, he left the place riding on Mollah Shamim’s motorbike.

At about 10:00pm on March 24 last, Motijheel Thana Awami League general secretary Jahidul was killed in firing at Amtola Masjid area at Shahjahanpur. At that time, rickshaw passenger Samia Afnan Zaman was also killed in indiscriminate shots. The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Masum on March 27 in connection with the double murders. On the following day, a court in Dhaka placed him on a seven-day remand. As the remand was over, he was produced before the court on early Tuesday afternoon. Investigation officer DB inspector Yasin Sikder pleaded to the court to record his confessional statement.

Regarding the arms and motorcycle used in the murder, Masum said a person acquainted to him gave him arms and motorcycle. Following the murders, he handed over the arms and motorcycle to that person.

Five persons including Awami League leader Omar Faruque are now in DB’s custody in connection with the murders. Other accused are Abu Saleh Sikder alias Shooter Saleh, 38, Nasiruddin alias Killer Nasir, 38, Morshedul Alam alias Kailya Polash, 51 and Arfan Ullah Damal.

Following the arrest of four persons including Omar Faruque, RAB said at a press conference that Jahidul was murder in sequel to conflicts over controlling the crime world, extortion, control of tenders, admission of students to schools and colleges, and establishing supremacy on kutcha bazars in Motijheel area.
