Traders clash with cops, vandalise for keeping shop open

Traders in Dhaka on Sunday locked in a clash with police and damaged a number of vehicles during demonstration protesting government decision to shut shopping complexes.

They brought out a protest procession in New MArket area in the afternoon and demanded withdrawal of lockdown, disrupting traffic in the area.

Earlier on Saturday, Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association demanded the government to allow shops to open for four hours daily ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

Shop owners and employees of of Dhaka New Super Market, Chandrima Super Market, Noor Mansion and other markets took to the main road of New Market around 3pm.

They brought out processions and chanted slogans against lock down.

The traders suddenly attacked police and pelted brick bats on the them and also vandalised a number of vehicles.

New Market Police inspector Yasin Ali told media that a number of protesters threw brick bats on law enforcers when they were talking to trader leaders.

At that time a chase and counter chase took place and some vehicles were vandalised, he said adding that the situation is now under control.
