Ghoraghat upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Waheeda Khanam, who was severely injured in an attack by miscreants at her official residence early Thursday, can speak and recognize others but cannot move the right side of her body, according to doctors.
National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital joint director Dr Badrul Alam said, “Overall condition of Waheeda Khanam is better now.
“She was not in a normal condition during the time of her admission here. Now she regains her senses, can speak and recognize others. Left side of the UNO is still paralysed.”
The hospital joint director told reporters on Saturday while briefing UNO Waheeda’s latest health condition.
Dr Badrul Alam further said they will take decision on shifting the UNO from the ICU unit after 72 hours, considering overall situation of her.
Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Dr Kanak Kanti Barua said Waheeda regains her senses but she can’t move the right hand and leg.
“Her (Waheeda) blood pressure and pulse were abnormal during the time of admission in the hospital. You can raise a question that why should not we conduct operation for the patient at the very beginning. Operation of a patient is not possible during an unstable condition,” said Kanak.
He said, “Waheeda is now able to recall her name, can speak after her operation. She has back to sense but not regained physical strength.”
Miscreants launched the attack on UNO Waheeda Khanam and her father Omar Ali after entering the UNO’s official residence early Thursday. Following the incident, joint forces of RAB and police launched an investigation. On Thursday, Dinajpur DB police detained the night guard Palash for questioning.
Later, acting on a tip-off, RAB arrested two Jubo League leaders–Jahangir and Masud Rana–from Ghoraghat, and suspected prime accused Asadul Islam from Hili border area under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur district.

Of the arrested persons, Dinajpur District Jubo League expelled Masud Rana, while the rest two were expelled from the central level of Jubo League.
UNO Waheeda Khanam’s brother Sheikh Farid filed a case accusing unidentified persons with Ghoraghat Police Station on Thursday.
