US could ratify Finnish NATO membership before August: Senate Republican leader

The US Congress will seek to ratify Finland’s application to join the Western military alliance NATO before going into recess in August, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has said, reports Al Jazeera.

McConnell told reporters in Helsinki after meeting with Finland’s President Sauli Niinisto that there was broad bipartisan support among US lawmakers for Finnish membership.

Canada, NATO’s other North American ally, has also said it is in favour of a rapid NATO accession for Finland and Sweden.
