BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said, “We never claim that Ziaur Rahman was the supreme leader of the War of Liberation in 1971. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman played the main role. But, Ziaur Rahman declared the independence. Why don’t you accept it?”

He was speaking as the chief guest at an opinion-sharing meeting with journalists at Al Barakah Convention Centre in Mymensingh town on Thursday afternoon.

BNP’s Golden Jubilee of Independence Celebration Committee’s Mymensingh Divisional Coordination Committee’s convener Nazrul Islam Khan asked the government why it wanted to take away the gallantry awards from the individuals who had received those for their outstanding bravery and dedication in the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971.

“Were the gallantry awards given at anybody’s mercy? These awards were their own achievements. By ignoring Ziaur Rahman, you’re dishonouring the freedom fighters,” he said.

Nazrul Islam Khan also pointed out that Ziaur Rahman had never made any discourteous remark on Bangabandhu. “Why are you trying to make the gallantry awards an issue,” he asked.

Golden Jubilee Celebration media committee’s member secretary Shyama Obaid delivered address of welcome, media committee’s convener and BNP standing committee member Iqbal Hossain Tuku presided over the function.

It was also addressed by Golden Jubilee Celebration National Committee’s member secretary Abdus Salam.
